A new study by Hal Caswell of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and his colleagues, to be published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, concluded that only 600 breeding pairs of Emperor penguins, or 5%, will be alive in 2100. The 95% decline in the population is mostly due to retreating ice and warmer temperatures in the Antartic. The team used climate models based on the IPCC resreach and population models to assess the future condition of the species. Read more here
