Australian oil spill an ecological disaster

230 tons of oil spilled off the cost of Queensland from a Hong Kong-registered ship on Wednesday. The 60km stretch of beaches has been declared a disaster zone. Worst hit is the marine sanctuary Moreton Bay, home to a variety of species of dolphins, turtles, pelicans and other sea birds. The cost of the clean-up is estimated to be $100,000 a day and the ship’s owner may face $1.5 million in fines if found guilty of environmental breach. The Australian authorities have been accused of moving too slow with the clean-up operations but they maintain that the beaches have been severely eroded by cyclonic activity which increases the safety of earth-moving equipment.
